Allow me to introduce my self. My name is Dennis. I moved into Winnipeg’s North end 4 years ago when cheap rent was available in an apartment above my work place. I am a 63 year old gay white male. I grew up on a subsistence farm in the Interlake area of Manitoba. Although poor, my parents worked hard and my 2 siblings and I were given a very secure upbringing. My personal struggles with identity and addictions have continued most of my life, but I am now in recovery for over 6 years and my life has turned around dramatically. Despite ongoing setbacks, my education and ability to “rise again” have garnered me a life of privilege. Today I declare myself poor as a church mouse, happy as a clam. Enough about me.
I have only followed your activities through the print and on line media. Thank you for your heartfelt, moving, and better late than never (or is it) article published in the Free Press on July 7. Canada, Manitoba, Winnipeg, and most of us continue to gloss over the desolation in our own homes and in those of our neighbours. Thank you for your continued inspiration, for your blunt writing, for being a part of an area I love as my recent new home.
Please feel free to contact me by email. Perhaps I shall see you at the Winnipeg Folk Festival, my spiritual retreat for 38 of the past 40 years.
